Escambia Co., FL – 73-Year-Old Man Killed in Crash on Barrancas Ave

Escambia Co., FL (March 6, 2025) - A two-vehicle crash on Barrancas Avenue at Nimitz Avenue claimed the life of a 73-year-old Pensacola man on Tuesday morning, March 5. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the crash occurred around 11:12 a.m. near the Pensacola Country Club.

Authorities say a red Dodge Ram, which was pulling a red utility trailer, and a black Chevrolet El Camino were involved. Both vehicles blocked the eastbound and center lanes of traffic. The Dodge Ram was driven by a 29-year-old Pensacola man, while the El Camino was driven by the older victim.

According to FHP, a witness stated that the El Camino had just pulled out of an auto collision center at 3550 Barrancas Avenue, directly into the path of the Dodge Ram, which was traveling westbound. The driver of the Ram attempted to avoid the crash but was unable to do so.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the 73-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by Escambia County EMS personnel. The driver of the Dodge Ram sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Baptist Medical Center for treatment.

An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and the loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.

Car Accidents in Florida

Florida sees a significant number of motor vehicle accidents each year. In 2022, over 396,000 crashes were reported across the state, with more than 3,400 fatalities and over 250,000 injuries. Many of these collisions occur at intersections, where drivers often misjudge the speed of oncoming traffic or fail to yield properly.

Understanding common factors behind accidents can help drivers stay aware and cautious on the road:

  • Failure to Yield: Many accidents happen when drivers do not properly yield the right-of-way at intersections or while making turns. This can lead to dangerous collisions, particularly with fast-moving vehicles.
  • Distracted Driving: Using a phone, adjusting the radio, or engaging in other distractions can reduce reaction time and lead to preventable crashes.
  • Speeding: Driving over the speed limit reduces a driver’s ability to react to sudden changes in traffic conditions, increasing the severity of crashes.
  • Poor Visibility: Low lighting, fog, or obstructed views at intersections can make it harder for drivers to see oncoming traffic, leading to misjudged turns and collisions.
  • Driver Fatigue: Tired drivers have slower reaction times and impaired judgment, which can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence.
