Car Accidents in Florida

Traffic crashes are an unfortunate reality in Florida, with thousands of accidents occurring across the state each year. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were over 400,000 reported crashes in a recent year, resulting in more than 250,000 injuries. Many of these accidents take place at busy intersections and along major highways, where congestion and high speeds contribute to collisions.

Understanding the risks of driving in Florida is essential. Below are some common causes of crashes that occur on roadways:

  • Distracted Driving – Texting, talking on the phone, and adjusting in-car entertainment are among the top causes of accidents. Even a moment of inattention can lead to a serious crash.
  • Speeding – Exceeding speed limits reduces reaction time and increases the severity of collisions. Many fatal crashes involve drivers traveling too fast for road conditions.
  • Impaired Driving – Alcohol and drug use significantly impair judgment, coordination, and reaction times, making impaired drivers a danger to everyone on the road.
  • Failure to Yield – Many accidents occur when drivers fail to yield at intersections or when merging onto highways. Misjudging the speed of oncoming vehicles can result in severe crashes.
  • Adverse Weather Conditions – Florida’s frequent rainstorms create slippery roads and reduce visibility, increasing the likelihood of accidents. Drivers should adjust their speed and maintain a safe distance in poor weather.
